Balto and the Great Race Book Study

$4.50

My students absolutely love reading the Balto story!! They love learning about the dogs and mushers that saved Nome from diphtheria.

This book study is the perfect way to explore and learn the Balto story.

It contains...

✩ a map of the route
✩ story map craftivity
✩ vocabulary word for each chapter
✩ tricky words for each chapter
✩ short answer questions for each chapter
✩ extended response questions for each chapter.
✩There is also a blank editable page so you can make your own questions.

If you have groups working independently, then this is perfect for you. There is no prep. Just print the page for each chapter and give it to the students. They read the chapter and complete the questions.

The story map is a craftivity with full instructions and photos! My students loved this as a culminating activity.

So far, I have only used the Husky craftivity/story element chart. The students' work looks super cute in the hallways! The ears were a little difficult for the students to be able to fold and put together themselves, but I found a few student "experts" who went around the room and helped the others out.
Ashley B. - February 25, 2019

This resource was great because there were short response and extended response questions for every chapter. I used in with my resource group and it allowed them to practice writing short response answers as well as extended responses.
Heather Bates - February 13, 2019

This is AMAZING! None of my 4th graders even knew about Balto and they are loving to learn with the readings. Great resource.

We used this unit during the last couple weeks of school, and my students absolutely LOVED it! We used highlighters to help restate the question in order to respond to them. Thanks!

I was looking for extension activities that would engage my readers and get them thinking about the story. What a great resource!
Rebeca Tyner - December 12, 2016

I have traveled to the isolated place I loved...Nome, AK. I love that town, and the people there. I can't wait to use this in my class after Christmas (closer to when the Iditarod is run), and share not only the book, but also the love I have for the place. Going to bring a bit of the largest state to TX.

My students and I absolutely loved this book study! I teach LD Students so the tricky words and vocab was perfect for them, each time we started a new chapter, we went over them & strategies on how to decode the words. Perfect for us! Thanks!
Sheri Hawkins - April 27, 2016

I have taught a Balto unit for a couple of years now, but I was so thankful when I found this packet. The questions are great and adaptable for strong and/or weak writers. A great packet!
Shannon L. - April 2, 2016

Excellent resource. Very creative and well-thought out. Gives students a chance to consistently practice providing evidence when answering questions. The vocabulary and map provided good talking points and helped us prepare for each chapter. Plus, the cute pictures were fun to color for early finishers.
Elizabeth L. - February 9, 2016

Great resource. I appreciate the "blank" template that can be used to customize.
Christine P. - October 27, 2015

These questions were excellent. I loved having the extended response prompt available for all chapters. Assign all, or assign only some. Thanks.
